Propagate

2012

discarded laboratory container lids

Huntington Beach Art Center, Huntington Beach, CA

Propagate is an expansive, site-specific installation that extends across three gallery spaces, composed of thousands of specimen container lids. These small, standardized plastic objects, typically used in clinical or scientific settings, are recontextualized to form a dense, immersive environment that transforms a sterile material into something organic and flowing. The work explores themes of environmental sustainability, consumerism, and the pervasive use of plastics.  It uses repetition and scale to evoke systems of growth and accumulation while reflecting on the impact of mass production and plastic waste.
